The FIRST Multicultural Sorority in the Nation.

In the early 1980s, a time when more culturally diverse women were pursuing college degrees, visionary women at Rutgers University New Brunswick recognized the need for a support system for these women - a sorority that celebrated diversity and crossed the societal boundaries of race, religion, culture, and class Through their dedication and commitment, Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Incorporated was founded on November 21, 1981, becoming the first multicultural sorority in the nation. Mu Sigma Upsilon has since grown to a national sisterhood with seventy chapters across the country and a diverse group of almost 2,000 women from 120+ cultural backgrounds.

Our Mission

While other Greek organizations are and continue to grow more diverse, our organization's foundation is based on diversity and our sisters embrace multicultural ideals and interests; we seek to use our sorority as a vehicle to educate the surrounding campus and community on issues of diversity. We recognize that diversity is not limited to race, and we are proud to say we have achieved a sisterhood which is quite diverse with respect to not only race, but religious heritage, geographic origin, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, nationality, political ideology, and even choice of major and career. Ultimately, multiculturalism is the belief that there is inherent value in discovering, understanding, and appreciating all the ways in which people are different from each other. It is for this reason that we differentiate ourselves, in name and in purpose, from Greek organizations with the word "Multicultural".

Founding Mothers

We refer to the women who founded Mu Sigma Upsilon as our founding mothers, for they achieved what mothers do and began a family. To this day, they still care for and guide our sorority and its sisters.
